Laurie McFadden is based in our London office and is co-head of our international energy and natural resources group. A partner since 1991, he specialises in public and private M&A, private equity and joint venture work. Laurie was in our Milan office between 1997 and 2001 where he was co-managing partner of our Italian practice.
Much of his work has been cross border in nature and includes advising:
- BAA on the sale of Gatwick and on the sale of World Duty Free;
- Permira on its acquisition of a controlling stake in Valentino Fashion Group and on the subsequent takeover offers for Valentino and Hugo Boss, the German fashion house controlled by Valentino;
- Grupo Ferrovial, Caisse de Depot du Quebec and GIC on their £16bn hostile takeover bid for BAA plc which owns seven airports including Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted and in addition operates airports in the US, Italy and Hungary;
- KKR, BC Partners and Goldman Sachs on their bid for the Spanish telecoms group, Auna;
- Advising KKR and Goldman Sachs in relation to their bid for Shell's LNG business;
- Acting for Goldman Sachs in connection with its bid for certain gas distribution networks in the UK being sold by National Grid Transco.
- Henderson Equity Partners on its public takeover of John Laing plc, the PFI/PPP infrastructure player, valuing the business at £2.5bn;
- Goldman Sachs Principal Investment Area on its €1.3bn acquisition of Italian cable and tire-maker Pirelli’s cable-making business;
- the Brascan led private equity consortium on its hostile public takeover bid for Canary Wharf Group (enterprise value of approx £5.3bn); and
- General Motors in connection with its strategic alliance with Fiat, including the formation of two joint ventures combining their engine and transmission manufacturing operations in relation to in Europe and South America and their purchasing activities in those jurisdictions.
Born in Canada, Laurie was educated at the University of Alberta (LLB) and at Magdalene College, Cambridge (LLM).
