James is a partner in Freshfields Foreign Law Office. He joined the firm in 1979 and became a partner in 1988. From 1992 to early 1995 he was a resident partner in the Tokyo office, and was a resident partner in the Bangkok office from 1995 to 2001 when he returned to Tokyo.

His practice includes M&A, banking and finance, capital markets, derivatives, joint ventures, privatisations, project finance, restructurings and securitisations.

In the energy sector his work has included:

  • advising borrowers on a number of North Sea Oil Project financings, including Phillips Petroleum (Maureen Field); advising a number of the UK independent oil producers;
  • advising the financiers on the White Nile pipeline project in the Sudan;
  • advising the underwriters on the sale by HM Government of shares in British Petroleum;
  • advising on a number of power project financings in Thailand;
  • assisting in advising Petronas on its joint development area arrangements with the Petroleum Authority of Thailand;
  • advising the Petroleum Authority of Thailand on a joint venture relating to oil storage and distribution in the Philippines; and
  • advising on a foreign participant's rights under its joint operating agreements in Thailand.
